Each year, the ovarian cancer support group Caring Together, Inc. coordinates the Teal Ribbon Run/Walk, an event held in Albany, New York to raise money to support research for finding a cure for ovarian cancer. The first run/walk was held in 2002 and raised $20,000, and it keeps growing every year. This year, the 14th Annual Teal Ribbon Run/Walk was held this year on September 13 in Albany’s Washington Park, and it was the largest ever with over 1,900 walkers and runners raising almost $100,000!
History of the Teal Ribbon Run/Walk
Advantedge Education’s Ann Purchase is one of the founding members of Caring Together, Inc. In addition to being a member of the very dedicated run/walk committee, Ann has been the ovarian cancer support group leader for 19 years. The run/walk was begun by Deb Cullinan, a nurse practitioner and ovarian cancer survivor who wanted to start the run to raise awareness and help fund ovarian cancer research.
To date, the Teal Ribbon Run/Walk has raised more than 1 million dollars to build awareness and fund research for a cure. Caring Together, Inc. works with the Foundation for Women’s Cancer (formerly the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation) and the Lynne Cohen Foundation to select beneficiaries for the research grants.
